Written by Jay Garrett on December 18, 2008 in: General Interest, Robots, Toys 'n' Stuff | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

robotkitHere’s a great idea for Christmas!

The tin can robot kit will help any budding bot builder to add motors, gears, legs and batteries to any empty drinks can.

When created, the robot “jitters around, buzzing and clacking” which sounds pretty great.

Everything is supplied, you just need to bring an empty can, an AA battery and a screwdriver.

The kit is on sale now for $15 from X-treme Geek.

Sweeeeeeet!

Vampire Hunting Kit Sold - Gadgets to Kill Vampyre

Written by Jay Garrett on November 16, 2008 in: General Interest, News | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

This actual case of Vampire killing tools has just been sold at an auction for $14,850.

Guaranteed 100% authentic, this anti-vampire kit from the 19th century is an absolute bargain.

It has pretty much everything that aspiring Van Helsing’s will ever need to trackdown and finally put to rest any pointy-toothed blood sucking type - no matter how well they dress.

So, what does the rather nice-looking hand-carved walnut suitcase contain? Let me tell you:

• A Gothic style cross.
• Bible.
• Hand gun and silver bullets (just in case you happen across a Lycanthrope I guess).
• Holy oils.
• Holy water.
• Mirrors.
• Candles.
• Garlic.
• Top-of-the range wood and metal stake with added cross for vampiric extra-pain.
• Extra wood stakes, just in case.

The 19th century vampire killing kit was sold in an auction as part of the Jimmy Pippen estate, which shows that the aforementioned Jimmy Pippen was a either an ‘eccentric collector’ or knew something that most people don’t.

Well, I’m going outside now so better wrap up, get my shades on and smear myself in factor 500……….

Ray Chaise - Comfy Chair Not Soul Maestro

You work hard all week (of course it still counts if you worked hard avoiding work - that can still wear you out) so you deserve to kick back in luxury.

How about some soothing sounds as well to help you unwind?

This is the handy-work of Italian design firm D.sign21.

The Ray Chaise (not to be mistaken with Ray Charles) offers the ergonomic and supporting shape of a classic chaise longue - renowned for being the ultimate chilling device.

It brings everything bang up-to-date with its fibreglass frame and plush leather upholstery and on closer inspection you’ll notice an iPod dock in the arm which is hooked up to a set of hidden speakers.

The minor point of how easy it is to get up from will remain exactly that: minor.  Why would you need to remove yourself from such a comfy position?

The Ray Chaise goes on sale next year for an as-yet undisclosed price.

In my run of Halloween gadgety loveliness I’ve kinda ignored the more creative of you.

Well, why not treat yourself to the Dremel Pumpkin Carving Kit from Firebox?

So, instead of carving your hands whilst trying to get that grin suitably scary and the eyes level this kit is dead easy to use:

  1. Hollow out your pumpkin
  2. Download the stencils from this link
  3. Stick one to your seasonal vegetables
  4. Start hacking away at the skin
  5. Carve with the pumpkin carver attachment

Then a totally cool piece of vegatitive art is yours :)

ROBO Builder Kit - Does Exactly What It Says On The Box

Written by Jay Garrett on May 25, 2008 in: General Interest, Hardware, Robots, Toys 'n' Stuff | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

ROBO Builder KitIf you want to build your own robot there are a few kits out there but I’m liking the look of this one.

The ROBO Builder set does exactly what it says on the box and it allows you to build 3 different bots named DINO, HUNO and DOGY.

Each new ROBO buddy can be programmed to perform different tasks or be controlled by your puter or a remote control.

You also get choose from a black or transparent kit. The write-up for the transparent version seems to boast significantly more advanced break-dancing skills - but you have to pay for those skills as it’s also a tad more expensive.

The prices are 660,000 won (or £330) for the transparent kit and 450,000 (£230) for the basic black version.

Lightsaber KitTo truly be one with the Force a young Jedi should let it flow through them - let it guide them in making their own weapon, the Lightsaber.

Failing that, get a kit online - namely the Force FC Lightsaber Construction set.

The kit contains instructions and all the parts which enable you to create the weapon of your dreams from 1,000 or so different designs!!

You can change the color (red, blue or green) of your saber with the flick of a switch and they can’t do that in the films.

The Lightsaber kit is available from Play for £49.99

Christmas Gift Idea for the Gadgeteer

MouseBotIf you don’t fancy queuing up for an iPhone/Pod/Mac, hunting for that ellusive Wii or bored of waiting for that XBox 360 limited edition thingy - why not try something different for crimbo?

My cousin mentioned this stuff last night and I’m really tempted to try some of it out so thought I’d share the wealth and point you folks in the direction of MakeZine.

They sell open source hardware - that’s various circuitboards, kits, etc.

They offer an open source MP3 player called Daisy or the fabby Mouse Bots as shown in the pic - It’s quite easy to add a few $100 into the basket without trying so be warned!! :0)
