ICEphone - Micro Notebook / Mobile Phone Combo

Written by Jay Garrett on November 18, 2008 in: Mobile Computing, Mobile Phones, News, design | Tags: , , , , , ,

I know what you’re thinking.  You’re thinking “what the heck is that!?!”

Well, it’s the iCEphone of course.

The In Case of Emergency Phone is aiming to be the “Swiss Army knife of mobiles”  and dubbed as a micro-notebook by its manufacturer.

Well, it’s no surprise that things have gone this far as everyone is cramming more and more into their mobile blowers.

I saw the Asus R50a a few days ago and thought that was nifty - so what’s this got then?

For starters the iCEphone has software that can not only walk you through common medical emergencies like administering CPR, but it can one-touch dial your doctor, the nearest hospital and 911 at the same time.

The makers, Medical Phone, decided that the only way to get everything into a handset just larger than an N95 was to use a Jacobs Ladder-style hinge.

This funky hinge connects the 3 panels that feature a full QWERTY keyboard, a 3-inch 400 x 240 resolution touchscreen and a mouse / track pad.

Other goodies are dual SIM card slots, HSDPA support, quad-band GSM connectivity, GPS, a 3.1megapixel camera, WiFi and a 532MHz Freescale iMX31 CPU.

It’s almost out in Thailand and then should be hitting the UK sometime in Spring when it will cost around £700

Santa Micro-Helicopter - Rudolph, Donner and Blitzen on Holiday

It’s time that Santa got up-to-date and also gave Rudolf et al a Christmas off for once.

It seems that he’s letting the Reindeer have a crimbo-party and delivering the gifts by way of a ‘Little Nellie’ style copter - which is nice.

This R/C flying Santa micro copter is guided about the place via a 3-channel remote and like the latest breed of tiny radio-controlled helicopters there are controls for trim as well as the tricksy up, down, forward, left and right mullarky.

Specifications

  • Materials: Carbon fiber
  • Flying Time: 8 minutes
  • Flying Range: 6 meters
  • Power: Internal rechargeable Li-ion polymer battery
  • Dimension: Helicopter 160(L) x 72(H) x 28(W) mm, Blade=135 mm
  • Flight Control: up/down, forward/backward, left/right, left/right trim
  • Power: 6 x AA battery (not included)

The Santa R/C Helicopter is available from Chinavision for 11.72 EUR (about $15 USD).

Ho-ho-ho-ho-ho!……etc.

Acer X3200 to Kick Eee Box?

Written by Jay Garrett on September 21, 2008 in: Desktop PCs, General Interest, Hardware, Media Centre, News, Office, Wi-Fi, video | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Asus’s Eee Box mini desktop is a sweet mini PC but it is missing that optical drive.

If you love the spinning silvers then shout hurrah! for Acer is about to launch its own mini PC - and this one’s got Blu-ray!

The X3200 is a mini desktop with lots packed into that small frame: in addition to the hi-def compatible drive, there’s an HDMI for lashing it up to a TV or projector, a quad-core AMD processor, Nvideo GeForce 8200 graphics chip, up to 4GB of memory and up to a terabyte of storage.

I can’t help but suspect that the price is gonna be a tad more than the £200 asking price of the Eee Box.

Smallest Desktop Computer - Picotux

Written by Jay Garrett on August 13, 2008 in: Desktop PCs, General Interest, Hardware, Mobile Computing, Portable Media | Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

There’s a trend for small desktop puters and our desks are becoming less cluttered.

If the offerings from the likes of Asus are still too big how about this little baby?

The Picotux 100 desktop computer isn’t going to be able to frag the competition in Half Life but it does have the firepower to type documents and possibly surf micro-sites on the Internet!

Check out this little lot:

  • 32-bit ARM 7 Netsilicon NS7520 processor (55MHz)
  • 2MB flash storage
  • 8 MB SDRAM
  • uClinux 2.4.27 Big Endian (native) operating system

All this is squished into a size of 35mm x 19mm x 19mm - I’m waiting for the first Matchbox car case mod soon ;)

The scary thing is that I remember the full size puters that offered Kb and not Mb - even when boosted with RAM packs………….anyone else remember those?

Ahh……….ZX 80 and VIC 20 where are you now?
