iPhone Accelerometer Controlled TV Out Discovered

Ars Technica was messing around with the latest iPhone SDK and found something called MPTVOutWindow - which, unsurprising given its name, sends video out through the Dock Connector port to an outside source - (the TV bit of the name), such as an external screen.

Apparently this bit of kit is meant for movies but also allows any program to export the current contents of the screen, theoretically allowing apps intended for screens larger than the 3.5 inch one on the iPhone.

iPhone developer, Erica Sadun, points out that the touch input is disabled in this mode so that stops the iPhone being used as a regular controller for games or presentations. It does, however, recognise accelerometer input for a basic level of control.

Check out the vid :)

iPhone Firmware 2.2 - Most People Ignored

iPhone Firmware 2.2 - Cut and Paste, video and pics over MMS, typing emails and texts in landscape are all the things that aren’t going to appear! :(

What you will get, however, is Google Street View and walking directions - obviously more important than those I mentioned above.

There is something a little more interesting on the horizon though.  It sounds SDK is now supporting line-in audio devices - this could open up some potentially interesting apps.

If you are on of the few that’s been hankering over streetmap views check out iPhoneyap’s gallery.

Xperia X1 Windows SDK Out

Sony Ericsson are following the iPhone’s lead and have today published their Software Developer Kit (SDK) for the lovely Xperia X1.

The X1 can be personalised through its neat nine panel user interface.

Developers can use the Windows Mobile SDK, free of charge, to produce a wide variety of panels.

The Sony Ericsson SDK for Windows Mobile 6.1 will be made available for easy download on the Sony Ericsson Developer World website.

AppLoop - Location Based Ads On iPhone 3G

Written by Jay Garrett on July 2, 2008 in: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

AliphoneWhilst most of us are waiting to buy the new iPhone 3G there’s equal anticipation coming from third-party companies and developers who are waiting to take advantage of the possibilities that the SDK and GPS offers.

AppLoop is a startup launching today that will provide developers with a self-service platform for tracking mobile application usage and distributing ads on top of these apps!

This sounds a little sinister to me - a little too sci-fi. Next step is to beam ads directly into your consciousness.

It claims to be the first ever real-time, location-based mobile ad network.

Using the iPhone’s native GPS capabilities AppLoop will tell when a consumer is close to a certain business address and then serve up ads for that business accordingly - kinda how those Bluetooth enabled bus-shelters and such have done.

So, as you walk past stores or restaurants you will receive various promotions, coupons, and discounts for those places.

Actions

AppLoop will also feed back a set of statistics for developers to track usage, location, and session info. It provides custom action logging, which makes it possible for developers to track which of their features are used most often.

eMarketer reports that mobile ad spending will reach $5 billion this year alone - so it is definetly a big bucks business.

Sling for iPhone and iPod Touch

iPhone SlingSling have just released some interesting information which means that you could watch Sling-ed (?) flicks on your iPhone or iPod touch (albeit on a jailbroken version at the mo).

According to Sling,

“Ever since the Apple iPhone hit the market, we’ve been receiving inquiries as to when we’ll have a version of SlingPlayer Mobile for the platform. To date we’ve only expressed our desire to support the platform when it is possible to do so. But with the Apple WWDC kicking off this week, we’re now ready to show off a bit of what we’ve done.

We do not intend to make this available to customers, it is a proof of concept. We are looking forward to the iPhone SDK becoming publicly available this week and fully intend to develop SlingPlayer Mobile using the SDK and are looking forward to selling it through the iTunes store. We started the development process before the SDK was available to characterize the performance of the platform and ensure that we could deliver a high quality customer experience on the iPhone & iPod Touch platforms. The results have been very promising and we are eagerly awaiting the SDK’s release so we can hopefully leverage what we have done already to deliver SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone.

So let’s hope that the SDK’s release will also see the release of this lovely bit of kit :0)

Rotary iPhoneIf you want your iPhone to wear some retro chic or you’re just plain feeling nostalgic you need this third party application that goes by the name of Visua mobile.

The app will put up this way cool rotary dialer upon your iBlower in place of that run-of-the-mill digital thing.

It’s just a shame that it doesn’t come with a dock in the shape of a candlestick handset……
