Nokia N97 Deatils Outed

It seems that Nokia have slipped out details of the N97 whilst my back was turned!

Their new flagship phone packs a 3.5-inch, 640 x 360 pixel (that’s a 16:9 aspect ratio) resistive touchscreen display with tactile feedback.

Nok have also slipped a QWERTY keyboard into this sliding communicator that features an “always open” window to favourite internet or social networking site.

Nokia is calling the N97 the “world’s most advanced mobile computer.”

Well they have crammed in HSDPA, WiFi, and Bluetooth radios, A-GPS, a 3.5-mm headjack, 32GB of onboard memory with microSD expansion (for up to 48GB total capacity), and a battery capable of up to 1.5 days of continuous audio playback or 4.5-hours video.

As befits the N9* series it has that rather spanky 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss glass and “DVD quality” video capture at 30fps.

It does read as being quite the special smartphone but will the S60 5th Edition OS can support it?

Also for that “mobile computer” claim it will have to drag the likes of me away from the simple and effective iPhone interweb browsing experience.

The N97 will launch early 2009 with a retail price set at around €550 - don’t forget to add on all those lovely taxes as well.

iPhone InCase PowerSlider - Extra Juice not Extra Width

Written by Jay Garrett on November 18, 2008 in: Mobile Phones, Mp3 Players, News | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I’ve seen a few ‘designs’ that bring a little extra juice to the JesusPhone but most have been….how can I say………a little ample on the girth?

This one, however, I feel needs a mention.

The Power Slider by Incase promises to double your phone’s power for up to 5 hours talk time on the 3G network (10 hours on 2G), increase your audio playback time to 26 hours, and increase your video playback time to 7 hours.

You can even leave the iPhone in its warm snuggly case while you sync it.  Bonus!

It’s probably the closest so far to get me thinking about buying an extra boost for my 3G lovely. Even though it does chubby up the Apple beauty a little.

As yet there is no cost info and even though it should be available starting November 28.

I’ll be waiting for my sample (please) - Any one else tempted?

LG KC780 - Say Bye-Bye Camera!

LG continue to negate the need to take out a compact camera with their KC780.

We all know that phones are getting bigger cameras but this one not only packs an 8MP sensor, it throws in a Schneider-Kreuznach lens, an ISO of 1600, face and smile detection, a spot-removing beauty mode, image stabilisation and ‘DVD-like’ video recording.

Why would you need to take your tiny camera to the pub?

If that wasn’t enough you can hook this up to your PC to use as a webcam.

You can also use it as a real mobile phone!

It’s got what you’d expect and it all can be viewed on the 2.4-inch screen.

You can find out more details and stuff from November, when the KC780 gets ever realer in Europe.

Fujitsu Concept Phone - Transforms into What You Want

Written by Jay Garrett on September 30, 2008 in: General Interest, Mobile Phones, News, Portable Media, design | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

This is a concept phone that ranks high on the cool-o-meter!

The Fujitsu device shown at CEATEC lets you to separate your screen and touchscreen keypad in whatever configuration you like.

This means that they can be used separately (one bit in each of your ultra-skinny jeans front pockets) or stuck together by magnets, and where you stick the screen on the keypad determines what the touchscreen shows. Fantastic!

The screen bit contains software functions, including video recording and games, while the keyboard is responsible for the comms side of things.  Stuff like 3G and radio.

This could stop all that quandry of soap bar or flip or slider…………

This is one concept that I’m hoping will:

  • Get released
  • …and not only in Japan ;)

What do you reckon?

Sony Ericsson Shiho - Cybershot C905 Pics Released

Sony Ericsson C905Well, helloooooooooo.

Sony Ericsson have allowed this lovely slider phone to get out and about prior to any official announcements.

It is, in fact (as far as I know), the Cyber-shot C905 - codenamed “Shiho.”

Now, if the grapevine is to be believed this snapper/blower combo is pretty much packed.

Rumour has it that the camera is no less than 8.1 megapixels and is teamed up with both xenon and LED flashes (that’s to take care of still snaps and video respectively).

Other goodies include GPS, TV out, DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) certification and HSDPA in both Euro and Stateside varieties - but it still a QVGA screen.

It has been whispered that it shall be announced on the Tuesday, 17th June and should be appearing in gold, silver and black in the fourth quarter.

Multiple Flavours of iPhone Choices To Come

Written by Jay Garrett on April 21, 2008 in: Mobile Computing, Mobile Phones, Mp3 Players, News, Portable Media | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

More news about the greatly anticipated 3G iPhone and word on the street is that it could be “Radically Different”.

This might be no more than Apple seeking MORE attention but the grapevine is all about different versions of the device to suit the preference of peeps.

Depending whether you’re after a music and video device, those that want a “communication” device (ie a phone!) or a laptop substitute - these are covered by the regular iTouch flavour, an iPhone with a slidey QWERTY keypad or a clamshell version with a larger screen.

Do you reckon this could be over-egging the (Apple) pudding or are you all for the choice?
