Giinii Movit Mini = Android iPod Touch?

Written by Jay Garrett on January 8, 2009 in: Mobile Computing, News, design | Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

giinii-movit-miniFancy an Android powered iPod Touch?

You know; something thin, with over four inches of touchscreen in a mini tablet form?

Well, here you are! :)

This is the Giinii Movit Mini.

It could actually almost be an iPhone challenger but it’s lacking the actual mobile phone bit, but it is Android so there’s VoIP to take care of that side of things….

…and don’t forget - that also means no tarrif and 18 month contract to deal with ;)

The soft keyboard seems pretty good from what I can see with a decent layout and a size that real manly men can use.

Apparently the resistive touchscreen was a let down as it lacked responsiveness meaning that it was hard to push buttons and an effort to scroll more than once.

Saying that; we have to remember that it is still at the prototype stage and these are things that could be ironed out.

I think that this has a lot of promise and at the possible price of $149 it could be a winner.

Cutest SE Walkman Phone. The Japanese Xmini

Written by Jay Garrett on December 8, 2008 in: Mobile Phones, Mp3 Players | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Instead of getting a mobile blower that will play your fave choonz how about when Walkman goes flip-reverse?

Most people would see the little player and think to themselves that it’s pretty cool.

But slide it open and you get a keypad and a working phone!

This is a Walkman phone. The Sony Ericsson Xmini has been added to KDDI’s (the Japanese telecom company - Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd) lineup.

It measures a tiny 75 x 44 x 18mm and ignores all the usual phone gadgetry such as cameras, etc and rocks a mere 320 x 240 screen and 4GB of on-board memory.

When closed the bottom of the face reveals music controls; then, when opened, the whole thing morphs into a tiny handset.

Well, I think it’s cute.

MacBook Nano - Mini Mac

Written by Jay Garrett on November 11, 2008 in: General Interest, Laptops, Mobile Computing, News | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Sorry - this MacBook Nano has probably never seen an Apple let alone Cupertino!

Whether this is a little custom hack or there’s someone is making a living churning these funked MSI U100 types out from a lock-up “sarf of the river” I have no idea.

But these shiny-but-fake Mini Mac’s do come complete with Mac OS X installed and to be honest I think I’d have one - if only just to confuse everyone else! :)

Granted - whoever is dishing these out needs to give them a little more tweaking but I’m intereseted - contact me yeah?  ;)

They come in black or white (guess which one I want) and here are the specs:

MSI U100 MacBook Nano
Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz
2G DDRII
10″ WSVGA LED (1024×600)
320GB SATA
1kg
MMC/SD/MS 4
Windows XP Pro + Mac OSX Leopard

Mini USB Second Screen

I for one am linked to way too many social networking time leeching sites and find myself jumping from app to app throughout the day just to check what’s going on or who is online.

Well, good ol’ Century Japan have just introduced something that could increase my productivity.

Namely the LCD-4300U USB mini screen.

So why would you want a tiny second screen?

Simple my friends - if you’re working on something important, let’s say that overdue report, you can concentrate on your main screen, with your ’social’ stuff on the second screen - no more screen flicking.

All you need is to have a USB socket spare and this 4.3-inch screen will plug right in.

It offers WVGA resolution with LED backlighting but it’s also asking £120 (plus shipping from the far east).

Is it worth it?

Space Cube Desktop PC For Tiny Borgs

First thing that has caught my eye is this tiny puter.

I do have a soft-spot for the little micros that you can hide away and still are usable if you’d prefer a desktop when at home.

This two-inch-square Space Cube computer has apparently been making the rounds in Japan for quite a while but PC Pro have finally managed to sneak one into the UK!

The little stow-away is packing a 300MHz NEC VR5701 processor, 64MB of RAM, a 1GB CompactFlash card, and a special version of Red Hat Linux, along with a single USB port, VGA out, built-in Ethernet and, most importantly for its target market, a SpaceWire port, which is used by the likes of NASA and the European Space Agency.

The bad news is that the initial price was quite a reasonable $325 looks as though it may be heading more to the region of £1,500 (or over $2,700)!

USB Keychain Mobile Phone Charger

This is a handy little USB Charger from Brando.

Stick it on your keychain and when you need a mobile phone recharge just find the nearest USB socket, attach the phone’s battery and power up as needed.

Granted you may find yourself sneaking a charge from internet cafes, random strangers working on laptops in the park but hey - you need your phone charged all is fair!

The price of such charging freedom? $12.00.

Smallest Desktop Computer - Picotux

Written by Jay Garrett on August 13, 2008 in: Desktop PCs, General Interest, Hardware, Mobile Computing, Portable Media | Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

There’s a trend for small desktop puters and our desks are becoming less cluttered.

If the offerings from the likes of Asus are still too big how about this little baby?

The Picotux 100 desktop computer isn’t going to be able to frag the competition in Half Life but it does have the firepower to type documents and possibly surf micro-sites on the Internet!

Check out this little lot:

  • 32-bit ARM 7 Netsilicon NS7520 processor (55MHz)
  • 2MB flash storage
  • 8 MB SDRAM
  • uClinux 2.4.27 Big Endian (native) operating system

All this is squished into a size of 35mm x 19mm x 19mm - I’m waiting for the first Matchbox car case mod soon ;)

The scary thing is that I remember the full size puters that offered Kb and not Mb - even when boosted with RAM packs………….anyone else remember those?

Ahh……….ZX 80 and VIC 20 where are you now?
