SIG - Sunglasses to Charge Your Toys

Written by Jay Garrett on December 28, 2008 in: design, fashion | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

solar-glassesCheck out these bling-bling shades!

If you wanna rock that rap-star look whilst simultaneously recharging your gadgets by the power of the sun then these are right up your ally!

These are still a concept at the mo but I still reckon that designers Hyun-Joong Kim and Kwang-Seok Jeong should be pretty smug regarding  their creation.

The SIG (Self-Energy Converting Sunglasses) convert the rays as you’re posing pool-side into usable energy for your little tech toys to drink up.

Brilliant :)

Solio Magnesium Solar Charger Review

Written by Jay Garrett on November 21, 2008 in: General Interest | Tags: , , , , , , ,

I try to do my bit for the environment.  All my watches (13 of them) are vintage (1950s-1970s) and my last car was a ‘71 Karmann Ghia - so, I’m at least recycling.

But, like most of you here, I have a stack of things that require recharging.

We all know that the main ways in which to generate electricity are not the cleanest of processes - unless you use the power of that rare orange globe that hangs in the sky (generally for a week in August in the UK).

Solar power is the way forward!

Thanks to the award winning high-tech Solio solar powered charger you can pretty much go wherever you want and feel smug in an eco-friendly kinda way.

One of the neatest things that the Magnesium Edition has over the basic Classic is the “energy gauge” LED light.  This indicates approximately how much juice you have left by the number of times the gauge button flashes, (four flashes indicates a full charge; three flashes, about 75 percent; two flashes, 50 percent; and one flash, 25 percent).

There are a number of other features that are worthy a mention but you’ll have to check out that full review.

All-in-all the Magnesium Edition costs $149.00 in comparison to the Solio Classic whose price tag is $99.95, it’s a bit of a jump but the review on Modern Eco Homes concludes it’s worth it.

Have a gander yourself and you’ll probably be putting in an order :)

Plantbot Scares Cats and Small Children….

This is a great idea but not for those who are a bit jumpy.

The Plantbot comes with some sort of solar seeking tech on board which literally moves it around to follow sunlight in the room.

Yup - it moves around on its four wooden, jointed legs to chase the rays of the sun.

I can only imagine that once the days get even darker you’ll be sat typing away on Twitter or something and there will be a ~Thud…….Thud……~ as the door opens and your favourite plant walks in with an unquenchable thirst to photosynthesise………

AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suntable - Powers Gadgets & Holds Mojitos

Written by Jay Garrett on August 9, 2008 in: Furniture, General Interest, News, Office | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

As I gaze out of my 3rd floor window watching the rain in London I can’t help but think that this bit of tech furniture belongs in more sunny climes.

The Suntable is made from teak, stainless steel and solar cells.

They’ve made a few changes since I first saw it and it’s now ready for shipping.

For $2,200, UPS will ship the 45-pound weatherproof, 120 volt table with enough battery storage for about 4-hours of laptop / TV use or 6-hours of night time lighting from a 25 watt bulb.

It just takes 4 hours of direct sunlight to charge it (see my point about having one of these in the UK?).

Solar Sail Messenger Bags - Sakku Very Much

Most of have seen those solar-messenger bags that charge your gadgets from the power of the sun - and most are pretty bland looking if we’re perfectly honest.

Well this line of bags from Sakku uses old sails for the material of the bag itself so it’s doubly good for the environment so green points for the win!

On top of the feeling of being eco-friendly each bag comes with its own story.

They are individually stamped with the name of the lake or sea in which the boat was located that they took the sail off of.

The bags range in price from € 175- € 245 or $275-$385 and you can even use PayPal!

VW Westfalia Goes Sun Tracking

Veridier CamperI love classic VeeDubs. I still have the Californian number plate from my Karmann Ghia Coupe that I had imported back in 2000.

So it’s good to see the Westy getting a revamp.

This hi-tech machine is the Westfalia Verdier Camper.

At the moment it’s a concept but that doesn’t stop me wanting it.

Forget the ‘basic’ accomodation offered by the original.  This beauty has tech that couldn’t have even be dreamed of when the original camper was built.

Amongst all the tech is an intelligent solar panel system called “SUN TRACKER”.

This system makes it possible to provide electricity to the on-board accessories while the vehicle is in a stationary position. All this is sorted by an on-board computer and GPS to calculate the optimal position for the SUN TRACKER.

It also has pneumatic suspension that lowers the vehicle for improved comfort and better stability whilst stationary.  There’s also lots of hybrid drive technology.

It’s Canadian (cool eh?), sleeps two adults and two kids and will cost around $69,000 a pop if/when it ever gets the go-ahead - please?  ;0,
