Stuff Gadget Awards iPhone Best Gadget of 2008

Well, little or no surprise that Apple’s 3Gesus phone has appeared as this year’s best gadget as chosen by readers of Stuff magazine in its annual Gadget of the Year awards.

Stuff described the iPhone 3G as “a faster, cleverer version of an already remarkable phone.” It makes it as a neat 1-2 as the phone’s first incarnation won the coolest gadget prize last year.

The 3G beat some stiff competition in the form of Sony’s PlayStation 3, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Nintendo’s Wii Fit and the B&W Zeppelin iPod speakers dock.

Stuff’s Editor, Fraser Macdonald, said the nominated products were judged on their performance, design and value, as well as “that elusive cool factor.”

“Having our readers vote for a number of the awards has been fascinating,” he said. “They are the ones out there on the street buying gadgets and so they are a great barometer.”

The magazine’s own gadget of the year prize, chosen by its editorial staff, went to the Asus Eee Pc, the sub £300 lappy that’s started a strong competitive market noone knew existed.

The judges said it had made more of an impact than any other device and marked the start of a “laptop for everyone” era.

Here are a smattering of the other winners that were announced at the ceremony held at the Dorchester Hotel in London yesterday:

Cool Stuff Exploded - In The Safety Of Your Home

Yup - me reviewing a book!

I was as amazed as the rest of you when Liz from publishers Dorling Kindersley sent me this particular tome to read and review for this site!

But once I got it in my hands all became clear.

Cool Stuff Exploded sounds a tad dangerous and pretty much bad news for the likes of the iPhone, top end Swiss Watches and Free Play radios - but it’s all ok my fellow gadget lovers!

This colourful tech book “explodes” everyday objects in the same way as those Haynes manuals do but through fantastically photographed spreads.

The pics show a piece-by-piece breakdown of Robots, mobile phones, computers, digital pens and gives details about how each part works and how they all fit together.

Even though I get the feeling it’s aimed at a younger market I found it great to flick through and also learned a few things which is never a bad thing - and if the you feel that the pics are a tad flat then the CD-ROM that it comes with will please you as it contains animations of the “exploded” views featured in the book.

A cool book for all ages I reckon :)

The cover price is £19.99 and is available now.
